We made our way to Road 32 by a circuitous route through the maze of Hanoi's crowded streets to Bac Yen. It was thrilling right at the beginning as the whole road was full of steep inclines and tight turns.
The most sensational off-the-beaten-path treks and mild adventure tours in northern Vietnam can be found there.
The road between Hanoi and Bac Yen was full of tight turns and steep inclines. The breathtaking scenery won’t disappoint any avid traveler, regarding the typical Vietnam motorbike tours. Indeed, we looked out over the massive tea plantations and terraced rice fields. The weather was nice and pretty cold with breezes, making us comfortable on the go.
The ride in the afternoon would be more leisurely, with over 40 kilometers of the off-road route via a Hmong ethnic town at the mountain's crest, where the slopes may be rather treacherous.
As the sun set, we returned to our guesthouse in Bac Yen village for a feast and rest.
It's a considerable shortcoming if you overlook Ta Xua, Son La. The word "Ta Xua" is no longer foreign among mountaineers and adventurers. It refers to one of Vietnam's ten highest mountain peaks.
Hiking to the summit is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to take in the plains’ stunning views and the clouds blanketing the mountaintops. Any cloud-hunting enthusiasts often recommend arriving in Ta Xua during October and April. Ta Xua peak is always the most amazing trail for motorbiking in northwest Vietnam.
Our journey from Bac Yen took us down a rocky slope, with sheer cliffs solely on a single side and a vast valley on the other.
The late afternoon finds us at Tu Le, a commune in the Van Chan district in Yen Bai province's northern, hilly Van Chan region. Rice terraces in Tu Le are world-famous, and the town is renowned for its location between three mountain ranges: Khau Song, Khau Than, and Khau Pha.
On our third day, we faced a 40-kilometer gravel route that put us to the test. Highlights of the journey consisted of a fragrant historic cinnamon forest and myriads of quaint towns selling bags of dried cinnamon bark from stands beside the road.
We rode on till we reached the shore of the artificial Thac Ba, a large and tranquil hydroelectric lake. Our team took a boat out on the water and felt the beat.
A significant canal system, such as the Hanh or Cat, supplies water to Thac Ba and the Chay River. The towns on the lake's edge are elevated due to the silt from the Chay River and the central canals' network.
Getting there, we interacted with the surrounding communities of Phu La, Dao, Mong, Nung, and Tay. Afterward, we visited Ngoc Luc Yen to see the Khai Trung plain and Sao cave. Amazingly, these explorations provided us with deeper insight and catchy stories into the Yao and Tay peoples’ unique culture.
Finally, we got to the homestay in the late afternoon, and our kind host taught us a cooking lesson in a traditional stilt house.
Before returning to the capital, we spent time reaching Ngoi Tu cultural village. Ngoi Tu boasted rich cultural traditions and one-of-the-kind natural settings. Thac Ba temple was where we found the serenity before getting to Thuy Tien Cave.
The Jade Emperor's daughter, Thuy Tien, was said to have fallen in love with Trong Hai, the Mercury's son. The two met atop this lofty peak on occasion. Their love story, perhaps, inspired the bizarre paintings decorating the cave. A sense of mystery permeated the entire cave as we stepped inside.
After that, we said our goodbyes to our gracious host. To get to the confluence of the Red Rivers, we took National Highway 2 to the quiet hamlet of Phu Tho and then rode along the river's levee. Getting to Hanoi was easy this way.
Our last day in Hanoi was so peaceful beyond the city's busiest time.
Join us on an offroad Vietnam dirtbike tour if you have time and a taste for spectacular and comical backdrops.
You will explore the outlying regions of our nation, looking for the scenic border of Vietnam. From the Vietnamese capital, what impressed us most were the Bat Cave, Mount Pha Luong, and even Ta Xua.
We all wish to get lost in the twisting Khau Pha, and O Quy Ho passes once more, as that isn't enough.
No wonder multiple go-to spots on our off-road excursions can spice things up. Now, it’s time to embark on your tailor-made journey!
