We were present at the designated meeting spot on the first day of our Vietnam motorbike tour. We received our trip briefing and specific instructions for a winsome and safe adventure there.
We started with a trip out of the hustle and bustle of Hanoi and into the rural district of Mai Chau and Hoa Binh.
Everything from majestic mountains to fields of blooming flowers to vast expanses of yellow or green rice paddies awaited us.
Arrival at Mai Chau was anticipated before sundown. Our team enjoyed supper and spent the night mingling with the locals over a game of "Ruou can" and several lively fireside dancing.
It would be a pity to leave Mai Chau without trying some local fare. The most well-liked food was bamboo rice, made by heating wet rice and a pinch of salt contained within bamboo tubes.
Notably, the bamboo rice from Lac village is often swapped with the five-colored sticky rice created from natural resources.
We took a ride to the outlying settlement where the H'mong live. Afterward, we moved over a small hill into a valley filled with tea bushes.
The boundless golden rice fields farmed by Thais and Hmong tribes on the route to Nghia Lo town were one of the most striking sights on the trip.
Later, our team arrived at Nghia Lo town for supper and lodging after a day of exploring the wilderness.
After leaving Nghia Lo, the team rode the rough trail toward Fansipan's top. Passing into Lao Cai province from the "Heaven Gate" of the Tram Ton Pass (O Quy Ho Pass), we were at an altitude of around 2,000 meters above sea level.
An enchanting vista of nature was spread out in front of our eyes. At about 4 in the afternoon, we made it to Sapa, had supper, and overnighted there.
North Vietnam is home to countless iconic travel sites, including Ha Long Bay and Trang An Ninh Binh. Among others, Sapa is perhaps the most cherished. Traveling by motorbike from Hanoi to Sapa and back along the Chinese border and through all the border regions was an acceptable way to see the country.
Following breakfast, we took a quick motorcycle tour of Sapa. Trips to Ta Van hamlet in the Muong Hoa valley were enriching and joyful.
Anyone could be won over by the lush greenery and the liveable culture of the indigenous people working tirelessly in the terraced rice paddies. Dreamlike Sapa town, with its local market, French church, and other wonders, was at our disposal in the afternoon.
Each indigenous group possesses its unique heritage, language, way of life, and customs. Each culture's particular traditional garb serves as a visual representation of its unique identity.
Our team rested in Sapa town at night to prepare for tomorrow's journey.
When we woke up, we packed up our rides and went for the mountain pass that led to Lao Cai. A brief pit break for coffee and a look at the congested Chinese border were on the agenda for our group.
After leaving Lao Cai, we continued our journey to Viet Quang via rough, narrow roads lined with rustic villages and local marketplaces. In Viet Quang.
In the afternoon, our motorbike trip headed to Ha Giang. It was a long day of riding, so we concluded with a fancy meal and a night at a hotel in Ha Giang.
Ha Giang's unique and vibrant culture reflected the many ethnic groups that call it home.
We indulged in the fine jewels, exquisite brocade textiles, and other heirlooms of centuries-old craftsmanship. Iridescent pieces of brocade adorned with motifs of birds and flowers emerged from the looms of a group of ethnic women, and it was a sight to behold.
Our group also took a relaxing row through the hamlet in a tiny boat constructed of interconnecting bamboo tubes and floated down a shallow river.
After that, we were packed with many fantastic hideouts, such as Quan Ba Heaven Gate, Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark, Vuong's Palace, and many others. We must say today could be the best day of motorbiking in Vietnam.
Finally, the tranquil village of Dong Van was the place to unwind for the night.
After breakfast, our group left Dong Van and continued riding to Bao Lac. Passing across Ma Pi Leng pass will reward you with a vista that will leave you speechless.
A mesmerizing panorama of the Nho Que River could be had at the turn of the pass. We paused for a while and snapped some photos to show off to our friends.
After lunch, all of us continued riding down the Meo Vac valley toward the Chinese border. We had dinner and stayed the night in Bao Lac, scheduled to arrive at 4 pm.
Our group soon reached a quiet, picturesque track snaking through the forest about 30 kilometers away from the tight roads. We instantly felt our stress melting away as the cool breeze and soothing sounds of nature restored our vitality.
In Ba Be Lake, we all found majestic sceneries and blissful towns tucked into the rolling hills. We breathed fresh air while taking in the hidden gems surrounding us.
In the heart of Ba Be National Park, home to a wide variety of animal and plant life lies Ba Be Lake. Caves, caverns, and a network of limestone mountains highlighted the region's karst landscape. Interestingly, we could bond with nature and the locals there.
Before the dew had dried, the lake took on the ethereal allure of a vast landscape cloaked in mystery. On a clear day, the lake seemed like a scene straight out of an ink painting, with the mountains reflected in the water. Of note, it was enough space for even the pickiest of tourists to relax.
Those who visit the lake in big groups can rent motorboats, while those who come alone or on an adventure can rent a dug-out canoe and drift peacefully on the water.
After all, we took an alternative route back to Hanoi from Ba Be that avoids the main highway so that we could take in the sights of the laid-back way of life of the locals. Our team was all back in Hanoi at around 4 p.m.
Light to moderate physical exertion was required on this vacation, so all should be fit, able to stand or walk for long periods, and ready to explore for several hours each day.
Excursions may require participants to traverse sloped pathways, steep inclines, and steps. Still, what you received, after all, was so fantastic.
Head for the Northwest Vietnam motorbike tour on your own and enjoy bliss!
